In this episode of Diferente podcast, I wanted to explore the topic of fear and how it affects our confidence. And I invited Adriana Alejandre, a Licensed Clinical Therapist in California, to join us for the ride!
Adriana specializes in helping people get through trauma, grief and loss. Most recently, she has become a disaster mental health worker to assist in national disaster relief efforts, including helping survivors of Hurricane Harvey and the Las Vegas massacre.
If you’ve ever experienced self-doubt, which most humans do, or if you’re wanting to make a change in your life and fear is stopping you, then this episode is for you!
Beyond the Episode
We asked Adriana to help us put together a list of important questions to ask when searching for a therapist, as well as some resources to make the process less difficult.
How To Find A Therapist
According to Adriana, you should interview your therapist before you decide to work with them. Some of the basic questions to ask include:
What can I expect out of the sessions with the therapist?
What therapy modalities does the therapist practice?
What are the therapists' specialties?
What are their rates? Do they have reduced-fee options?
What openings do they have?
Do they have a website?
Ways to De-Stigmatize Therapy
Be open to therapy treatment and mental health.
Talk about it with people in person, or online.
Be cautious of the language you use when talking about mental illnesses and therapy- people suffer from anxiety and depression - they are not depressed - they suffer from it. People are not alcoholics, they suffer from alcohol abuse.
Mental pain is like physical pain. Give it importance too.
