This episode of Diferente marks a year after I came to a very harsh realization about myself and I was confronted with what I had been believing for so long. For most of the first three decades of my life, I believed that to be beautiful I had to be skinny, have a flat stomach, a round plump ass and of course nice boobs.

Eventually I let go of the hope for larger breasts, and I accepted my lovely girls as they are, but I moved on to be annoyed with my belly because I don’t have a six pack. It didn’t help that for YEARS, on days my belly wasn’t laying flat, my mom would poke my side and say, “you’re looking very full”. That made me super self-conscious, even though I've always been thin.

But then I started judging people this way! Not as overtly as my mom did to me, but I began making assumptions about people’s self-worth by the size of their body. Measuring their value like it was something that had anything to do with a scale. Thankfully I had a serious reality check last year. And because of that, I’ve started noticing the ill effects of diet culture and body shaming were ALL AROUND ME.

On TV, on Instagram, in plastic surgery commercials on the radio, my friends who were dieting and complained about their bodies, and in my own home with me… Looking at myself in the mirror judging, telling myself I need to be more fit, less round, have a flat stomach.

All of this has been too much. I’ve had enough! Of course that is easier said than done. Because undoing 30 years of being told that a “fit” or sculpted body is the way to happiness is going to be a lifelong process.

That’s when I started raising questions about my beliefs, and my biases and I knew that if I was going to truly live a "DIFERENTE" life, I would have to confront my own fat phobia.

So I invited Christy Harrison, to help kick things off, because I know I’m not alone in this journey and I want to share it with you! Christy is an anti-diet registered dietitian and certified intuitive eating counselor, and the host of Food Psych Podcast. She specializes in helping people make peace with food and reclaim the time and energy they lost to The Life Thief that is diet culture.
